Welcome to the Isle of Wight Linux User Group.
We are hoping to develop further interest in the Linux operating system which over the last few years has become increasingly accessible and a reasonable alternative to Windows. An operating system is the part of the computer which allows you to "drive" the engine; the programs you load are what allow you to go where you want. Linux is more akin to Unix-like systems such as Apple Mac and Android rather than Windows, and unlike Windows does not rely heavily on anti-virus software. It has the added advantage that it will run on the same hardware as Windows, even alongside Windows.

from Wikipedia entry:
In 1991, while attending the University of Helsinki, Linus Torvalds became curious about operating systems and frustrated by the licensing of MINIX, which limited it to educational use only. He began to work on his own operating system which eventually became the Linux kernel. |
